INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE SURGERY

TELEPHONE
1. Please telephone the Hospital the day before your scheduled surgery
to confirm the time of your arrival for bed allocation and costs.
DIET
2. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANY FLUIDS AFTER MIDNIGHT THE EVENING BEFORE
YOUR SURGERY, REGARDLESS OF TYPE OF ANAESTHETIC: LOCAL/GENERAL, IF
SURGERY IN AM OR AFTER 6.30AM FOR PM SURGERY.
MEDICATIONS
3. IF YOU ARE TAKING REGULAR MEDICATION CHECK WITH DR REGARDING TAKING
YOUR MEDICATION ON THE DAY OF SURGERY. IF DR INSTRUCTS YOU TO TAKE
YOUR MEDICATION ON THE MORNING OF SURGERY, DO SO WITH A SIP OF WATER
(NO JUICE OR OTHER LIQUIDS).
4. DO NOT TAKE ANY VITAMIN E ONCE BOOKED FOR SURGERY AND AFTER SURGERY
FOR TWO WEEKS.
DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN OR ANY MEDICATION WHICH CONTAINS ASPIRIN FOR 10
DAYS BEFORE AND AFTER YOUR SURGERY. PLEASE CHECK THE LABELS OF ANY
MEDICATIONS YOU TAKE (EVEN THOSE AVAILABLE WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION) TO
MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT CONTAIN ASPIRIN (OR ACETYL SALICYLIC ACID).
PLEASE CHECK OUR ADDITIONAL LIST. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ASK YOUR DOCTOR
OR PHARMACIST. TAKING ASPIRIN WILL INCREASE YOUR TENDENCY TO BLEED AT
THE TIME OF SURGERY. HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY SHOULD ALSO BE
STOPPED BEFORE SURGERY. YOU WILL BE INSTRUCTED WHEN TO RESTART IT.
WHAT TO WEAR
6. On the day of surgery, wear loose fitting clothes which do not
have to be put on over your head and
low heel shoes. No panty hose/tights. Do not wear make-up or nail polish
or cosmetics. Bring
scarf and sunglasses to wear after your operation.
7. Contact lenses cannot be worn in the operating room, wear glasses.
8. Leave all valuables and jewellery at home. Although you will be
provided with a locker for your
clothing while you are in surgery, the Hospital cannot be responsible
for any valuables or jewellery
misplaced or lost.
SMOKING
9. Smokers should try to stop smoking from the time of the surgery
booking. Smoking irritates
nasal passages and causes coughing which might bring on a bleed several
days after your operation.
It is also a contraindication with General Anaesthesia. Smoking also
slows healing due to a
decreased blood supply to the operated area.
PRE & POST-OPERATIVELY
10. Report any signs of cold, infection, boils or pustules, fever,
appearing before surgery.
11. Take 1 gram of Vitamin C and 1 tablet of Biozinc daily the week
before surgery and continue for
one month after surgery.
TRANSPORT INSTRUCTIONS
12. YOU MUST NOT DRIVE HOME AFTER YOUR OPERATION. You should make
arrangements for a responsible person to accompany you home after your
operation. If you live
more than an hour’s drive from the hospital, we recommend you
arrange to stay in Sydney for your
post-operative night.
13. AFTER surgery do not remove bandages or splint unless instructed
to do so.
14. SUNLIGHT: You must not expose fresh scars or swollen, red bruised
skins to the sun or
tanning booth. Sunlight may cause swelling or the skin to ‘stain’
due to excess deposition of
pigment which can be permanent.
THE NIGHT/DAY BEFORE SURGERY
1. Nothing to eat or drink AFTER MIDNIGHT/6.30AM IF PM SURGERY.
2. Shower and wash your face with mild soap, shampoo your hair. Remove
all make-up.
3. Do not cream your face afterwards.
4. Remove all jewellery.
THE MORNING OF SURGERY
1. No make-up. This includes MASCARA. Make sure that all mascara is
removed from the eyelashes and lid margins as the material can get into
the scar and may permanently stain the scar.
It may irritate the eyes if the eyes are taped.
2. Nothing to eat or drink.
3. Your pre-operative medication will be given to you after arrival
and ordered.
4. Take medications as prescribed. Check with the surgeon and the
anaesthetist.
5. Plan to be at the hospital or office at the time required.
6. Please do not hesitate to call during regular office hours if you
have further questions about these instructions.
7. Do not take anything valuable to the hospital.
8. Take something to relax you while you wait e.g. magazine, book,
Walkman.
PRE-OPERATIVELY
Pre-operatively please attend to the following highlighted points.
1) Blood tests.
2) Chest X-ray (45 years and over, history of heart/lung disease or
smoker).
3) ECG (45 years and over).
4) Mammogram/Ultrasound for breast surgery.
5) Consent forms signed and returned to Dr Hodgkinson’s rooms.
6) Admission form signed and filled in then returned to the appropriate
hospital.
7) Call the hospital the day before to confirm the time and hospital
costs.

A deposit not received 14 days prior to the booking is subject to immediate

to surgery.
PRE-OP DRUG INSTRUCTIONS
Please obtain the following vitamins before surgery and follow the
instructions precisely.
1. Biozinc - 1 tablet daily.
2. 500 mg (Vitamin C)
Take 2 tablets a day at breakfast, the week before surgery and continue
for one month with same
dosage. Do not take the morning of surgery.
3. Panadol 500 mg (Pain Killer)
For pain if needed after surgery take one - two tablets. In case of
severe pain, you should contact
the office.
N.B. If you have any questions about drug instructions please call
the office.
4. Check with your doctor or nurse regarding regular medications.
