Operation Restore Hope prepares to take offOperation Restore Hope is once again on its way to the Philippines in November of this year. Three teams of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and volunteers will head to Manila and Cebu to treat children with birth defects and deformities, especially cleft lip and palate. We expect to do at least 150 operations during the November mission. These missions are a major undertaking as we have to provide not only the doctors, nurses and equipment but also every glove, suture and medication used. It’s quite a logistical challenge throughout the year in both Australia and the Phillippines. |

Creating this contour or figure for the patient requires the surgeon to remove fat to the right depth in both the area affected and all surrounding areas to avoid the pitfalls of dimpling. This can necessitate the use of multiple liposculpture techniques including tumescent and ultrasonic as well as many sizes of cannulae (instruments). In Liposculpture, the expertise of the surgeon is more important than any machine or method, as creating the right contour takes years of experience. I have performed this procedure for over two decades. Liposculptureby Dr Hodgkinson

Dr. Hodgkinson explains about Breast AugmentationThe Size, Shape & Look – You Decide |
|||
|
No two women are alike and so not one implant or operation suits all women. Implant typesImplants come in not only many sizes but many shapes, from round to tear drop, asymmetrical and anatomic. The shape a woman wishes to achieve is measured against her existing breasts and her chest wall to determine the appropriate shape and size of the implant. The surgeon must have adequate experience to be able to understand the patient’s desires and physical realities: current shape and size of breast, elasticity of the skin of the breast, position of the nipple and shape and bony contour of the chest wall. Implants are commonly filled with saline or silicone. Both implant types have advantages and disadvantages. It is my experience in over years that most women who can will chose the saline implant, which has a natural feel and moves more naturally than silicone. The saline implant can also be inserted through a smaller incision that its silicone counterpart. Silicone implants are appropriate in cases where the woman has a bony chest well or very thin skin. Silicone may also be called for in women having implant replacement or reconstruction after mastectomy. Most importantly, however, is that the patient needs to have the advantages and disadvantages of both silicone and saline implants discussed with them. |
IncisionsBreast implants can be inserted through many different incisions, including endoscopically through the belly-button (saline implants only). The most common incision sites are under the breast, in the armpit or around the nipple. The type of implant can dictate the length and location of the incision. This too needs to be discussed with the patient so that they understand the alternatives available. |

Isolagen - a new answer to smoothing wrinkles!We will soon be one of the first practices in Australia to be using Isolagen.Isolagen is a technique in which your skin can be taken as a very small biopsy and Collagen can be grown in a laboratory from your own tissue. This Collagen will give a quasi-permanent result to the solution of wrinkles averting the hazards of having permanent injectables. As you know, we have been very active with our non-permanent injectibles and certainly, for those patients who want a temporary result, this is an excellent product. Anti-wrinkle treatments such as injections have also been very successful. However, for a quasi-permanent reduction of wrinkles, nothing is better than your own tissue. If you are interested in this procedure, please let us know by email and we could begin in this direction for you. APTOS Threads another optionWe are also working with some of the world’s leaders in the area of APTOS threads. I am now more confident that the technique has its place for those who desire a modest improvement with minimal morbidity and downtime. |
These tiny threads are placed into sagging tissue and provide a temporary support for the tissues. I have been using the technique as an additional method for supporting tissues in the traditional and newer facelift procedures. If you are interested in APTOS threads, make an appointment and we can decide whether you might be a candidate for this procedure. |

College doubles in size during Dr Hodgkinson’s PresidencyThe Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery’s Conference on the Gold Coast was a big success. Dr Hodgkinson handed over his presidency at this fourth annual Convention upon completion of his term of office. During his presidency, the College doubled in size and became firmly established as the leading organisation in Australia for cosmetic surgical education and training. At the Conference Dr Hodgkinson gave seven lectures on aspects of cosmetic surgery, including facial rejuvenation, breast reduction and rhinoplasty, as well as his charity work – Operation Restore Hope. Immediately upon Dr Hodgkinson’s return, his bags remained packed and ready to go to India. He was involved in a teaching course on rhinoplasty with the Indian Society of Plastic Surgeons, where he also presented lectures on breast augmentation, breast reduction, chest wall reconstruction and facial rejuvenation. |
Dr Hodgkinson caught up with two of his old teachers – Dr Ian Jackson from Mayo Clinic and Dr I.N. Tiwari – Head of Plastic Surgery in Delhi. His talks were well received and he has been asked already to return next year to expand the programme.
Dr Hodgkinson is presented with a memento of his successful India trip |
