Ultasonic Liposuction now at the Double Bay Day Surgery

The latest technology in ultrasonic liposuction - the Contour Genesis - is now available at the Double Bay Day Surgery.

Ultrasonic Assisted Lipoplasty, commonly referred to as UAL, is a positive addition to the repertoire of the surgeon performing body contour surgery. "Ultrasonic Liposuction is without a doubt one of the most significant improvements in fat removal surgery over the past 20 years," says Dr Darryl Hodgkinson. "It ranks with the inclusion of 'sculpting' the body as a prerequisite concept for all liposuction".

Liquifies fat faster, easier

Ultrasonic liposuction is different from conventional tumescent (or wet/superwet) liposuction in that it uses high frequency ultrasonic or sound waves to actually 'liquify' the fat, thus facilitating its removal.

(continued from column 1)

This technique is especially effective for larger areas and fibrous fatty deposits, such as those on the back, which are otherwise difficult to remove.

Individually customised

As with any operation, there is no single best procedure for all patients. Highly experienced surgeons will customise the operation to suit the patient's needs. Using both ultrasonic and conventional tumescent liposuction in conjunction with one another they not only remove unwanted fat but sculpt the fine smooth contours of the patient's figure.

Dr Hodgkinson answers your questions

Q: What type of implant do you prefer for breast enhancement?

A: I'm often asked this question. In contrast to many surgeons who prefer to use one particular type, I use every sort of implant as well as a wide range of incisions to insert them. This flexibility is important to meet the patient's desires and obtain the optimal result. The choice is contingent upon the patient's shape, the condition of the breast tissue, whether there is droop (ptosis) of the breasts and the overall figure shape. In over 90% of cases, I use a saline implant. The smooth-walled saline is ideal for the younger patient who has never had an implant, has very little ptosis of the breasts and wants to have a C or C+ brassiere size.

No more hospital stays: procedures in-house at Double Bay Day Surgery

Why make a trip to hospital if you don't need to? This is the desirable option open to many patients considering cosmetic surgery with Dr Hodgkinson. Now that private health insurance does not cover cosmetic surgery hospitalisation, more and more patients are becoming interested in outpatient surgical procedures. With the advent of the Double Bay Day Surgery, many patients are now finding that hospitals are a thing of the past. The patients can have quite complex surgery easily, and more importantly, safely, right here on the premises.

State of the art complex

The Double Bay Day Surgery and the Double Bay Laser Surgery Clinic have been operational since February 1997. This state of the art complex with two operating rooms, both fully licensed for general anaesthesia, have now had carried out within them 800 outpatient surgical operations including facelifts, rhinoplasties, breast augmentations, liposuctions, resection and repair of skin cancers and laser resurfacing as well as a multitude of other procedures.

"The Day Surgery has been specifically designed with cosmetic surgery in mind"

The Day Surgery is fully licensed with the NSW Health Department, and is currently preparing for accreditation by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards. It has been specifically designed with cosmetic surgery in mind, and incorporates state of the art equipment, both from Australia and overseas. The advantages to having surgery on site are many and varied. There is a more supportive, intimate atmosphere, among staff with whom you will already be familiar, specialised in plastic and cosmetic surgery.

More private than a hospital

It is more private than a hospital, so anonymity is assured, if this is a concern. The staff of the Day Surgery have been handpicked by Dr Hodgkinson for their skills and knowledge, as well as their enthusiasm and belief in cosmetic surgery. This attitude plays a very important role in your overall experience. It is our mission that cosmetic surgery should be a positive experience for all patients, and lead to an enhancement of confidence and lifestyle.

KTP Laser vaporises unwanted surface veins

You can now rid yourself of those unsightly superficial veins in the face with the KTP Aura laser. Dr. John Doyle, Consultant Dermatologist to the Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery Clinic and Dr. Jennifer Hunter, the Clinic's very own GP, have begun running special sessions with the KTP Aura laser and the results have been fantastic. The laser simply 'zaps' the small vein and seals it, leaving no more unsightly red or purple veins visible on the surface. It takes only seconds for each vein and creates a slight stinging sensation which can be reduced by applying an anaesthetic cream 20-30 minutes in advance. If you have broken capillaries on the face, neck and decolletage you would like to be rid of, call the Clinic to see Dr. Hunter or

Dr Hodgkinson and Dr Hunter speak at
Sydney Women's Expo

It was "standing room only" when Dr. Hodgkinson and Dr. Hunter from the Clinic gave their presentations as featured speakers at the inaugural Sydney Women's Expo at Darling Harbour in early August. Dr. Hodgkinson spoke on Operation Restore Hope as well as giving an overview of Cosmetic Surgery as we approach 2000. Dr. Hunter spoke on meridians of the face in Chinese medicine and what the meridians tell us about our inner health (don't miss her article in this newsletter which gives a glimpse of one aspect of that talk).

Also at the Expo, the Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery Clinic staff were all on hand to answer questions and provide information at our own display. The Clinic was very well received at the show - our booth was swamped with interest. In the Sun Herald list of things to do in Sydney the Sydney Women's Expo was listed with Dr. Hodgkinson and Ita Buttrose as two of the 'drawcards'!

New: Obagi Blue Peel

Obagi chemical peels, developed by Dr. Obagi of California, have been around for a while but in 1997 Obagi launched the new Obagi Blue Peel in the USA, and it is now available to you at the Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery Clinic. The Blue Peel has been specifically designed to treat dark spots and patches as well as lines that are not affected by alphahydroxy/glycolic acid peels.

Furthermore, the Obagi Blue Peel can be applied to the hands, arms, chest and back as well as the face. The skin will frost and appear as if it has been 'sunburnt'. As the superficial layers of damaged skin flake off, newer healthier skin will surface leaving the patient with a fresher appearance.

This peel is particularly beneficial to people with Asian, African and Mediterranean skin due to the significant reduction in post peel hyper-pigmentation.

The Children of Operation Restore Hope

Six children 'taped up' after their cleft lip repairs

What makes Operation Restore Hope, Dr. Hodgkinson's surgical mission to the Philippines, so special is the children themselves. These children of Cebu, who suffer from birth defects and deformities, not only show great courage in facing the adversity in their everyday lives but are also some of the bravest little patients the surgical team has ever seen. The prospect of having both function and normal looks returned to them gives the children enough spirit and hope to get through the operation and healing process. In its most recent rnission, Operation Restore Hope operated on 44 patients: 34 cleft lips, 7 cleft palates and 3 burn contractures.

If you want more information about Operation Restore Hope, please contact either Kim Castrey or Katherine Hassler at the Clinic to find out how you can help.

Holistic Wellness:
It's all in the face (Pt 1)

by Dr Jennifer Hunter
B.Med; MScPH. D.L.S.H.T.M.

For a thousand years, Chinese doctors, herbalists and acupuncturists have observed the correlations between certain facial features and our internal health. They use Meridian Theory to understand the health of the whole person - body, mind and soul. There are 14 Meridians and each has a separate function. This is the first of a series of five articles where I will review the face diagnosis of two of the ten main Meridians. If we have problems in an area, what do all those wrinkles, sags and blemishes mean?

Splean/Pancreas Meridian

The main facial features are swelling or redness of the upper and lower eyelids and crows feet/smile lines. This meridian governs the spleen and blood quality; the pancreas, insulin, blood sugar and energy levels; menstruation and premenstrual symptoms; digestion and nourishment; and satisfaction, sensitivity and thoughtfulness (or lack thereof).

Go to column 2 >>

Stomach Meridian

The main facial features are discolouration, swelling or wrinkles over the bridge of the nose; worry lines beginning at the start of the eyebrows; and the characteristics of the upper lip. This meridian governs the stomach (eg. stomach ulcers and indigestion) and appetite for food and life; the regularity of the menstrual cycle; changes in puberty and breast feeding; and habits, hoarding and knowing what you want.
