I'm no longer self-conscious about my nose...

For many years I didn’t like the shape of my nose and always thought that in the future I would do something about it.

In 2003 I found a magazine called Cosmetic Surgery Magazine and started buying it every three months, reading about rhinoplastic surgery. I liked reading about and seeing results from Dr. Darryl Hodgkinson’s patients.

Finally, in June 2004 I decided to go ahead and have rhinoplastic surgery because I had read so much about Dr. Hodgkinson I felt confident he could help me.

From the time I had my first appointment right through to having surgery I wasn’t worried, because I felt that all the staff were professional and very experienced.

The surgery was very successful, I got the result I wanted and I am very happy. I’m no longer self-conscious about my nose, and my confidence is boosted. I’m just glad I came accross Dr. Hodgkinson, my first and only choice.

Australian makeover shows: not the whole picture

I am sure you have recently seen many television shows in Australia which are trying to emulate “Extreme Makeover”. As you can imagine, I was approached very early on by the Channels to see whether I would ratify the concept of real life cosmetic surgery.

My impression was that the shows were going to be rather deceptive and completely unrealistic. I was also told that no matter what the result, the make-up artists, hairdressers and lighting experts would make it look great.

I reviewed the candidates for surgery and felt that none of them were ideal. I care about my patients and pride our practice on producing world class results which I can present at international meetings of my colleagues using unretouched studio photography without the “lights, bells and whistles”.

Cosmetic surgery is a very serious decision for our patients and the choice of surgeon and surgical facilities critical to success.

Dr Hodgkinson answers your questions

Q: “How can I look as competitive as I feel?"

A: These days. men often feel the pressure of ageing, not only feeling fatigued and less enthusiastic by the age of 50 but generally looking that way. Encouraged by the success of rejuvenation surgery in women, men now comprise about 40% of my practice.

By the age of 50, normal ageing in men can result in a sagging of the jowls, a double chin and a very aged, tired, bedraggled appearance.

Power-Assisted Liposculpture

Dr Darryl Hodgkinson talks about advances in liposuction

Power Assisted Liposculpture is a term for the new technology where the tip of the suction cannula vibrates back and forth, gently removing the fat, whereas the older techniques required the surgeon to push the instrument forcefully through the fat tissue. The machine is like a mini jackhammer. After the patient is anaesthetised and the tumescent technique is used to reduce blood loss, the power assisted liposculptor can be used to shape the body.

I am now using my third generation Power Assisted Liposculptor and I have found that over the last year, this has improved safety, produces less bruising and swelling, less discomfort for the patient, I need to use smaller incisions and the recovery time is much faster. No matter what tool is used however, the most important thing in obtaining a first class result, one that the patient and surgeon are both proud of, is to assess the whole figure and address it rather than ‘spot’ suction different areas.

By that, I mean, give the patient’s torso gentle curves, define the junction between the buttock and the thigh, shape the inner thighs so that they do not bulge together and create sensuous contours from the waist to the mid thigh. There are a hundred subtle details that need to be adhered to, to give the patient an optimal result from liposculpture.

Like all craft, design is of the utmost importance and the final figure will depend on the surgeon’s artistic modelling of the patient’s fat. For this, the Power Assisted Liposuction apparatus represents the State of the Art.

New Rejuvenating Facial Peels at CRSC

For patients who wish to freshen and rejuvenate their skin, the Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery Clinic have introduced two new office based chemical peels available only at Doctor’s surgery.

The “Benefit Peel”

The lighter peel is the “Benefit Peel” which will freshen the skin, reduce the dead cell layer that builds up on the skin over time and stimulate cell turnover. This encourages a fresh and rejuvenating look to your skin. This peel is a light peel with minimal down time. Some people do not actually peel afterwards but do notice the effect of the procedure with their skin appearing softer, fresher, glowing and stimulated. The light peel can be performed without any preparation to the skin and suits all skin types. It will not require time off work or many restrictions on your activities the next day, and is ideal for those who have busy schedules.

Also available is a deeper office based peel called a “Timeless Peel”. A pre-peel consult with Dr Margot Campion is required 2 weeks prior to the peel. During the pre-peel consult, your skin type will be assessed and you will be advised on how to prepare your skin leading up to the peel using the products morning and night.

A pre-peel pack is available for you to purchase which contains the products which you will require to prepare your skin prior to the peel. Most women purchase the pack and continue to use many of the products from the pack after the peel as well. The advantages of purchasing a pack is that, if you wish to have a second or a third peel, the pre-peel package can be used again to prepare your skin for this.

“The Timeless Peel”

The “Timeless Peel” is a deeper peel and for most people, creates peeling a couple of days after the treatment. The first day, your skin may feel a little tight and you will be required to use a rescue balm, which is a deep moisturising agent. The second and third day, the skin may start to peel depending on the amount of preparation of the skin, some people just have light flaking and others have fine peeling.

We are holding fundraising concerts here in Australia, gathering supplies and equipment. Dr. Hodgkinson is traveling to the Philippines in October to pre-screen children and make sure that everything is in order before two surgical teams travel in November to operate and one team gears up for Februaryy 2005.
