Dr Hodgkinson elected President of Australasian College of Cosmetic SurgeryMajor meeting of international cosmetic surgeons to be held in Sydney October 2001Dr Darryl J Hodgkinson has been elected President of the Australasian
College of Cosmetic Surgery. I am honoured to be President of this College for the next two years, said Dr Hodgkinson. I am currently helping to arrange a major meeting of international surgeons at the end of October.
|
"This meeting will be of benefit to members in the form of continuing medical education and cross fertilisation between the fascinating different fields of medicine which are involved in cosmetic surgery. I regard the position of President of the College not only as a great honour but also a considerable commitment. Fortunately, I am ably assisted by an energetic Executive Committee. I believe the time has come when the domain of cosmetic surgery is finally, and rightly, being shared by all the relevant specialist medical groups. |

Cosmetic Surgery UpdateNew York, May 2001 saw the 30th anniversary meeting of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons where I presented a paper on breast augmentation associated with chest wall deformity. The latter constitutes an unusual group of patients but the truth is, most patients who are examined with a view to having a breast augmentation have some asymmetry of the chest wall. There comes a point with quite a significant number of patients where breast implants alone will not give an adequate result. In these situations we add different sorts of solid implants for muscle augmentation in order to achieve as symmetrical and optimal a result as possible. At the meeting, the main controversies were concerning the short, incisional facelifting procedures. Endoscopy has improved the situation for patients immensely, by reducing the resultant amount of scarring. The question has been raised whether the results are as good and long-lasting as with previous techniques. This is a question we certainly do not know the answer to yet. A fascinating study has been completed where twins have been operated on using different methods and after six years, it appears there may not be as much of a difference between many of the techniques as often believed. S Lift has only short term effectHowever, it would be true to say that the very short 'S lift and neck procedure probably gives patients a result that they are disappointed with in a short period of time and this is why more extensive procedures have evolved. At the Clinic, we have patients who ten years on do not require a secondary procedure. For this reason we believe that the minimal approach to face-lifting can only be performed in the younger patient who does not have too much laxity of the neck and cheeks. |

The advantage of this minimal incision over traditional procedures is that there is less scarring and down-time while maintaining the long lasting and more natural results of complete facelifts that include this fixation of the underlying tissues. Facelift with Lower Eyelid Lift

Anti-wrinkle Treatment for Crows Feet
Before I recently attended an Advanced Anti-wrinkle Workshop which was presented by a world expert in anti-wrinkle treatment - Dr Phillip Werschler M.D. from Seattle, Washington. Dr Werschler is the Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine Dermatology at the University of Washington. It was fascinating to hear his lecture on anti-wrinkle injections and his enthusiasm about the procedure. It was also very reassuring to see that most of the technique that he was using was very similar to that we have developed here at the Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery Clinic. If you are interested in having anti-wrinkle injections, make an appointment with Dr Margot Campion, Cosmetic Physician at the Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery Clinic on 93627405. To discuss the various options available to rejuvenate your skin under
clinical conditions at the Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery Clinic, please
contact Gail Farrugia on (02) 9362 7404 or Dr Margot Campion on (02) 9362
7405 for an assessment. Our new Skin Care Clinic offers gain without pain, using only the most advanced and proven therapies and prospectively making patients much happier. |

Charity Concert for Operation Restore Hope at the Stamford Court Hotel, Double Bay Operation Restore Hope held a charity concert on Sunday 3rd June in the Bay Room at the Stamford Court Hotel in Double Bay. The concert was in aid of children in the Philippines with birth defects and deformities who without charitable intervention would go unaided. Prior to the concert, which featured the music of Gershwin. a short video was shown. The images in the video of the environment in which these children live. as well as the extent of their deformities left most of the audience torn between tears for their reality and a desire to help restore their hope for the future. The majority of the children shown suffered from cleft lip and palate although Dr. Hodgkinson mentioned that the charity saw a great deal of other conditions as well - especially burns. Dr. Hodgkinson also spoke of the charity's 10 year history, having now treated oven 500 children (all successfully). The concert itself showcased the talents of duelling pianists, a young clarinetist, a violinist and the St. Agatha's Youth Choir. All of the artists donated their time. The program ended with an appeal by Mrs. Katherine Hodgkinson who mentioned that due to the 'family nature' of the charity that not one cent went to administration, salaries or fundraising companies. The concert was followed by an afternoon tea during which concert-goers, organisers and some of the doctors and nurses of Operation Restore Hope shared in good food, good fellowship and a great cause. |
